In Huachuca City, on Thursday, January 12, 2012, the Benson Middle School Academic B Team finished first out of twelve teams competing. The team had six members, two that switched out between the first and second rounds. The members of the team were Emily Rosengarten, Samantha Fortner, Maria Galloway-Sprietsma, Marisela Stewart, Zackary Wiegand, and Kayla Rubens. Their prize was originally second but an opposing team was disqualified. Benson’s B Team was ecstatic to learn they had moved up a spot to first place. “Out of three rounds, I watched two. There were too many people on the team and we had to switch out. Watching all of the teams high-five and exclaim for all of their correct answers, made my stomach flip. My team stayed quiet, not betraying their scores. I was so nervous, and I actually knew most of the answers. It was a great team effort and everybody did great,” said Samantha Fortner, who was part of the team. The whole group was very happy to learn that they had finally taken a first place. The trophy they received can be seen in the Benson Middle School main office’s showcase. “Wow! I really can’t believe we won. The team worked so hard. WE WON, ” said Maria Galloway-Sprietsma. The entire team was so pleased to have the honor of collecting their first place trophy.
